Role & Responsibilities:

This is a technical leadership role. You will be the most senior engineer in the region, responsible for both hands-on delivery and for establishing the engineering culture locally. Newport3 is a mature institutional trading platform with a large, modular codebase; you will need to get productive in it quickly and be able to guide others doing the same. You will act as the regional bridge to the remote core team and contribute to longer-horizon decisions including a potential shift toward a modern UI stack.

  • Lead the local team's technical direction — own architecture decisions for features and modules assigned to the region, with alignment to the broader distributed team
  • Drive delivery end-to-end: from requirement clarification through design, implementation, code review, and release
  • Mentor junior members within team
  • Conduct code reviews that raise quality and transfer knowledge, not just catch bugs
  • Identify and manage technical risk — legacy code, test gaps, performance bottlenecks, integration fragility — and communicate trade-offs clearly to stakeholders
  • Contribute to the roadmap for UI modernisation: evaluate candidate technologies (e.g., web-based frontends, Electron shells, or JavaFX migration), prototype where appropriate, and make a case for or against approaches with evidence.
  • Build a shared understanding of the system across regions — document non-obvious behaviour, own the onboarding experience for future regional engineers\n- Coordinate releases and CI/CD pipeline improvements; own quality gates for regionally developed features
  • Write and maintain unit and integration tests using JUnit, JMockit, and AssertJ Swing; maintain coverage standards as the codebase evolves
  • Collaborate asynchronously with the remote team, picking up and resolving tickets independently while escalating blockers early
  • Gradually become a regional point of contact — capable of onboarding future hires and explaining system behaviour without always needing the remote team
