Nomura Services India, (Powai) supports Nomura’s businesses around the world. Powai’ s world class capabilities in trading support, research, information technology, financial control, operations, risk management and legal support have played a key role in facilitating Nomura’s global operations and are an integral part of Nomura’s global expansion plans. Divisional Overview :
The Operations division provides the support and control infrastructure that enables the Firm to develop and deliver financial products throughout the world. Working with the Sales, Trading and Information Technology Divisions, Operations professionals are responsible for the management and execution of transactions in a manner which maximizes profitability and minimizes risk.
Our division is responsible for the management and execution of millions of securities transactions on a daily basis. Our responsibilities include trade processing, confirmation, settlement, fails management, margin, asset servicing, risk management and various client services. In partnership with sales, trading, prime services, information technology and other teams from across the bank, we apply a continual focus on improving productivity and efficiency, while seeking new and innovative ways to support our clients' changing needs.
Business Unit Overview :
Securities Settlements processes all activities related to the settlement of a trade when NOMURA, or one of its customers, buys or sells a security. The team interacts heavily with Fixed Income, Equity Trading and Sales, Credit, Treasury, Risk and Information Technology. Responsibilities include confirming trades, managing the delivery and receipt of securities and cash, and recording transactions on our books and records. Core settlements manages clearing and settlement of securities both for proprietary trading and for clients, dematerialized and physical securities
Prematching:
•As the term suggests, this is the initial stage in timely settlement of a trade. At this stage the primary objective is to agree all the dynamics of the trade to ensure its correct settlement.
•This activity is started at a S-2 stage, which cal differ if required by market regulations and other specifications around a trade.
•This is done via email and phone follow-ups to ensure audit and compliance requirements are adhered to
Settlement Day Matching and Settlements:
•This is the day the trade actually settles in the market. A lot of activity is generated around the trade, from covering short positions to deliver to chasing counterparty brokers in case of failing receipts.
•Conversations with the local agent banks also form a part of this day, to ensure our instructions are matched and to resolve any agent level issues.
•Trades that require special attention - Corporate actions, New Issues, Potential Buy-in deliveries, Market regulated claims are give priorities and settled in accordance to the standard operations procedure.
•Reconciliations: Also form part of Szero BAU, this is actual recon between the cash and stock reports for the day. Any breaks or discrepancies are closely monitored and closed. This helps us in having clean balance sheets and reporting our Mark to Market numbers every day.
Fails Management
•Root cause analysis and resolution of any and every trade that has not settled on the specified time in the market.
•Covering short positions, and taking steps to mitigate any risk around the fail.
•Reporting of the failed trade to relevant concerned teams / persons.
Exceptions Queue Management
•Trades that feed in without any field missing form a part of Exception Queues. We resolve any exceptions that occur around Settlement exceptions, Swift Exceptions and Settlement decision exceptions.
Client Reports
•Reporting on a daily basis / as required by clients for their cash and stock positions.
•Funding reports.
•MTM status reports.
MIS and Control Activities
•A daily MI is published for us to understand our risks in the market and taking mitigating actions to avoid financial losses and loss of goodwill in the markets.
•This MI is published at different levels - ranging from India Management to Global Audience.
•An error log is also maintained to remain on top of any error / issue that we see in the future.
