Department overview:
The Legal team is an integral part of the Legal, Compliance, and Controls ("LCC") function, which comprises dedicated professionals in law, compliance, and governance. This team provides essential support and services across Nomura's diverse business divisions, including Investment Banking, Global Markets, Corporate, and International Wealth Management. The LCC function is pivotal in safeguarding Nomura's interests and ensuring adherence to applicable legal and regulatory standards.

 

Role description:
The primary purpose of this role is to lead and manage the Legal team in India, delivering strategic legal support and guidance to Nomura's operations in the Asia ex-Japan (AEJ) region. This position requires a seasoned legal expert who can effectively oversee legal services, ensure compliance, and mitigate risks associated with complex business transactions.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and manage the Legal team in India, ensuring the delivery of high-quality legal services that support Nomura's AEJ business operations. Foster a collaborative and high-performance work environment.
  • Provide expert legal advice and counsel to senior management and various business units on a range of complex legal matters. This includes guidance on investments, transactions, regulatory compliance, and risk management strategies.
  • Oversee the negotiation, drafting, and review of legal agreements, contracts, and other legal documents to safeguard Nomura's interests and ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
  • Where required, act as Nomura's representative in external matters, and work closely with external legal counsel to ensure effective legal representation and outcomes.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain legal policies, procedures, and best practices locally to ensure consistent and effective management of legal risks across AEJ operations.
  • Stay informed about changes in relevant laws, regulations, and industry practices. Provide timely guidance to the business on the implications of these changes and necessary actions to remain compliant.
  • Collaborate with other LCC teams and functions to ensure a coordinated and consistent approach to legal and compliance matters across Nomura's global operations.
  • Manage the legal resources for the India Legal team, ensuring efficient and cost-effective operations while maintaining high standards of service delivery.

 

Skills, experience, qualifications, and knowledge required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Law or a related field from a reputable institution.
  • At least 12 years of relevant experience in a legal role, preferably within the financial services industry, with a focus on the Asia ex-Japan region.
  • Extensive knowledge of legal principles, regulations, and practices relevant to the financial services industry. Proven ability to provide strategic legal advice on complex matters including investments, transactions, regulatory compliance, and risk management.
  • Strong skills in negotiation and drafting, with experience in reviewing and negotiating legal agreements, contracts, and other legal documents.
  • Experience in managing and leading legal teams. Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work flexibly and effectively with cross-functional teams and senior management stakeholders to achieve common goals.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, with a keen attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in English, with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and thrive under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
