Mid-level Strategist (Associate/ Jr. VP) in Wholesale Strategy – GM focus
Role/ Team overview:
Wholesale at Nomura encompasses the Global Markets and Investment Banking businesses. The division has operations across all four regions – Japan, Asia, EMEA and Americas – and is a globally integrated franchise.
The Wholesale Strategy team occupies a pivotal position in the business. Working with the Head of the Wholesale division, the Head of Global Markets and their management teams, the team develops the longer term strategy of the business. This can include growth strategy, product/ regional strategy, business optimisation, strategic investments/ digital strategy, market and competitor analysis etc. The team also works closely with the Wholesale business leadership as well as Group Finance and Risk in the financial planning processes of Wholesale and the firm.
The London team has a portfolio of work across EMEA and Global, for both Global Markets and Wholesale. We partner closely with Strategy teams in each of our main business hubs (Tokyo, Hong Kong, London and New York) and the offshore centre (Mumbai). The team is also engaged in global and group-wide initiatives co-ordinating with Group colleagues in Tokyo.
Colleagues in the team have a variety of educational qualifications and professional backgrounds, with a large number coming from Tier 1 Strategy consulting (MBB, Oliver Wyman, etc.)
Job Description:
A mid-level strategist is an individual contributor who will have the opportunity to work alongside fellow team members across the full gamut of projects undertaken by the London team. They will typically be staffed on more than one project at the same time and will have exposure to a wide range of strategic initiatives of the firm, as well as senior business leaders from the outset.
The focus of the work will be on the Global Markets business – both EMEA and Global. GM has been globalising under the new leadership and the head of EMEA GM is also the global co-head of Rates.
As the strategist grows into the role and develops credibility, they will have the opportunity to manage internal ‘client relationships’ for the team and shape the book of work for the team. In the absence of more senior team members, the strategist will functionally represent the team.
Candidate desired profile
- 4-7 years of experience, flexible. Management Consulting or Banking experience preferred
- High degree of numeracy, including ability to develop financial models and perform data analysis
- Strong communications skills (verbal and written) – ability to interact confidently with senior business leaders in a trading floor environment
- Interest in the wider asset markets, capital markets and Investment Banking environment, and the actual business of banking. Desire to develop a wide-ranging generalist skill-set in the industry
- ‘Problem-solving’ and ‘project mode’ temperament – willing to see a task through to completion at a high level of skill and professionalism
