Department overview:
The macroeconomics team at Nomura is compact – the Chief European Economist is supported by another economist; in addition there are two FX strategists. The small nature of the team would give the candidate a great deal of opportunity to grow into a wide-ranging role covering European macroeconomics (primarily euro area and UK, but Switzerland and Scandinavia too), reporting to the Chief European Economist.
Role Description

The ideal candidate will cover European macroeconomics and central banks, focused on the euro area and big four economies – Germany, France, Italy, Spain – the UK, Switzerland, Sweden and Norway.

Producing thematic research pieces, calling the direction of central bank policy decisions as well as regularly updating their models of GDP and inflation forecasts.

The candidate will be required to update clients and internal sales/traders on what the latest news means for their policy calls and the risks to the view ahead.

While primary focus would be on the euro area and UK, the candidate might be expected to spend some time covering Switzerland, Sweden and Norway, albeit to a lesser degree.
Skills, experience, qualifications and knowledge required

Experience of covering European economies and central banks from a macroeconomic perspective.

1-3 years of relevant work experience ideal. Degree in economics/statistics/finance.

Experience with a European central bank or Treasury desirable but not necessary.

Ability to present to clients, update views in real time, speak on podcasts.

Strong technical economic background and quantitative skills.

Fluency in spoken and written English; familiarity with other European languages a plus.

Experience in use of Excel/PowerPoint/Python/R. Haver/Macrobond/Economic software a plus.

Dynamic, entrepreneurial and inquisitive. Enjoys working in teams.
