Job Title: Credit Product Controller

Department Overview:

The Product Control team is part of the Finance division, working closely with Valuations, Collateral Management, Risk & Operations Middle Office, and other Corporate Functions to support Wholesale business and trading activities.

As an independent control function, Product Control (PC) safeguards Nomura's financial statement integrity through preparation and verification of daily and monthly P&Ls. The team reviews trade booking and valuation processes, performs balance sheet reconciliation, and ensures accuracy of all trading P&L positions and corporate data.

PC collaborates with Risk, Operations, IT, Legal, Compliance, and Finance teams to maintain robust controls while providing management with insights into Wholesale trading performance and key financial metrics.

Under Nomura's mature offshore P&L production model, this onshore role focuses on business liaison, middle office collaboration, and value-added advisory services. Responsibilities include business advisory, performance analysis, balance sheet substantiation, and valuation controls.

The candidate will build strong relationships with trading desks and develop deep understanding of trading strategies to evaluate performance and provide senior management with insights on business performance, challenges, and opportunities.

 

Role Overview:

The Product Controller will oversee the AEJ Credit business including Flow and Structured Credit with expansive product coverage from Credit Default Swaps, Credit linked notes, Total Return Swaps, Structured Repos and Loans and structured products transactions. The role of the onshore team spans from balance sheet substation and valuation controls, performance analysis, and business advisory.

The candidate will need to have a good and sensible understanding of financial resources metrics including RWA, Leverage Exposure and Funding implications in monitoring daily business movements and transaction analysis.

The role requires candidate to possess a strong sense of accountability through demonstrating effective independent work skills and being a key contributor in a dynamic team environment. The role offers a close working relationships with the trading desk enabling the candidate to develop a deep understanding of the business’ trading strategies, and exposures to the firm’s senior management, particularly in presenting business performance and challenges.

 

Role Description:

  • Perform timely and accurate calculation, verification, reporting of Daily, and Month-end  P&L & Balance Sheet reporting. 
  • Ensure accurate accounting in line with USGAAP/IFRS and make necessary adjustments where necessary.
  • Ensure booking of Trades into correct Trading/ Banking books in line with FRTB requirements.
  • Undertake critical reviews of P&L and Balance Sheet to ensure proper accounting application and controls in place. 
  • The individual will work closely with Trading desks, internal finance teams, and other corporate functions (including Risk, Operations) to resolve booking, valuation and P&L reporting issues. 
  • Lead / Participate in wider transformation projects in leveraging AI tools to improve process efficiencies and accuracy.

 

Skills, experience, qualifications, and knowledge required:

  • Minimum Degree from an accredited University or Professional Qualification for e.g. Chartered Accountant or Chartered Financial Analyst
  • Relevant product control experience with a strong understanding and experience of derivatives and financial instruments, preferably structured credit products such as but not limited to credit derivative
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in Product Control or Valuations with a strong technical knowledge of Financing/ credit products
  • Experience in USGAAP/IFRS accounting skills for complex transactions and BASEL 3 rules and regulations
  • Track record in addressing and resolving issues independently, attention to detail with analytical capability, maintain a strong can-do attitude.
  • Strong communication skills, demonstrate collaborative teamwork, and confident in presenting complex financial transactions to stakeholders across front office and corporate. 
  • Strong control mindset, able to challenge the status quo, suggest changes, and re-invent the process. Desire to drive for improvement and efficiency.
  • Excel capability is essential, with experience with Microsoft PowerBI and Query tools for data analysis and reporting desirable
  • Strong stakeholder management skills with ability to build and maintain relationships across multiple business lines and functions
