Purpose and Summary

 

As a Linux-Storage Engineer you will play a vital role in ensuring the stability and performance of our Linux-based infrastructure. This will include ensuring operations run consistently in a standard way across all regions and that data is appropriately stored, protected or archived within agreed service levels. As part of the 24/7 service be responsible for incident and change management and provide technical guidance to other members of the team or other infrastructure teams.

 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Full life cycle management of all Linux and Storage systems
  • Provide technical excellence and guidance in best practice
  • Actively seeking opportunities to improve the processes, technologies and stability of the Linux estate.
  • Performing routine system maintenance
  • Auditing & implementing remediation actions to comply with IT Governance policies and procedures.
  • Performing root cause problem investigations and implementing remediation.
  • Use Jira & ServiceNow to coordinate department activities and be able to develop dashboards and reports that measure success.
  • Work to deliver new technology such that its adoption and configuration is standard between all regions and collaborate with development groups to enable the features meeting the needs of the company.
  • Partaking in On-Call Rota (Inc. Weekend Work).
  • Use Ansible for configuration management and uniform deployment.
  • Ability to create concise, clean, and clear technically documented re-usable code and understand the philosophy of coding (IaC).

 

 

Skills & Experiences Assessment

 

  • Linux Proficiency: A solid understanding of Linux operating systems, including experience with installations, configurations, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience of an enterprise Linux, preferably Red Hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS or Oracle Linux.
  • Experience of using RedHat Satellite to manage global footprint of servers.
  • Experience of using containerization tools such as OpenShift and Rancher.
  • Hands on experience with Linux Kernel, FPGA and Network card offloading.
  • Experience managing F5 load balancers.
  • Good SAN/NAS Knowledge: Familiarity with Storage Area Networks (SAN) and Network-Attached Storage (NAS) centralized storage concepts.
  • Basic networking such as TCP/IP, DNS.
  • Satellite, DHCP, PXE and Kickstart for booting and building servers
  • Web servers such as Apache or NGINX.
  • Knowledge of Dell and HPE server Infrastructure
  • Red Hat (or similar enterprise Linux) Certification
  • Scripting/programming in Ansible, Perl, Python, Java
  • System Monitoring and Reporting Software, such as Prometheus, Nagios, SolarWinds or similar.
  • Troubleshooting Skills: The ability to diagnose and resolve technical issues efficiently, with a keen eye for detail and problem-solving.
  • System Monitoring: Experience with system monitoring tools to detect and address operational issues proactively.
  • Security Awareness: An understanding of security best practices and a commitment to maintaining system security.
  • Documentation: Proficiency in maintaining accurate and up-to-date system documentation.
  • Collaboration: Strong teamwork and communication skills to work effectively with colleagues and other departments.
  • Entry-Level Linux Experience: While experienced candidates are encouraged, entry-level candidates or recent graduates with a passion for Linux are also welcomed.
  • Learning Orientation: A desire to continuously learn and adapt in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity of network technologies: TCP/IP, SNMP, LDAP, Current LAN/WAN technologies (desirable).
  • Familiar with scripting, automation tooling, such as Python or Ansible (desirable).
  • Experience of using Jira and ServiceNow tools.

 

 

Job Knowledge, Qualifications and Education

 

  • Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or equivalent experience.
  • Industry related certifications are a plus (RHCSA)
  • 10+ years’ experience across related fields.
  • Ability to learn and communicate technical information through high & low level designs.
  • Must have excellent English written and oral communication skills.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills in order to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to wear multiple hats, depending on business requirements.
